Nectar by Joji

Ew - opens the album beautifully, atmospheric with dark, sinister lyrics that set the mood really effectively. it does feel a bit disconnected from the rest of the record though.

MODUS - lacklustre overall. the chorus is the standout section, joji's vocal layering adds a load of depth and emotion there.

Gimme Love - a personal favourite. great tempo and energy that uplifts the mood even though the subject matter is depressing. the ending is the best bit, the vocal work and those high plucky strings.

High Hopes - great instrumental, but the vocals in the chorus don't work for me. omar apollo's more emotive, energetic delivery lands much better in the other sections.

NITROUS - punchy and bouncy, the muffled backing vocals and white noise push joji's lead right to the front. a real highlight.

Afterthought and 777 - the best tracks on the record. lofi beats and grungy vocals combined into something extremely memorable.

great album despite some lowlights and missed opportunities. it took a while to grow on me but the bulk of it is truly enjoyable — worth it for anyone into lofi and alternative r&b. it shows off joji's vocals and that atmospheric production even when the individual pieces don't perfectly line up.
